Just me or did this week fly by? We had delicious little bunnies for Easter, made out of Quark-enriched yeast dough and pearl-sugar sprinkled yeast dough with raisins for eyes. I finally got around to reading Not Becoming My Mother, which just about broke my heart. And Hugo, doing his best to grow his hair out like Justin Bieber, discovered the tastiness of his mother's nose. We're going into an extreme cozy zone this weekend, early bedtimes and all (though, ahem, there will also be much blood, guts and incest since we have three more episodes to go in the second season of Game of Thrones hoooo boy I am so obsessed oh my goodness), and I can't wait.

Elsewhere,

Have you ever baked with black cocoa powder? (I'd never even heard of it!)

Tami Taylor loves caviar!

Speaking of breakfast inspiration, this granola includes millet, delicious millet.

Such good ideas for those of us who work from home.

I can't stop looking at these.

5 ingredients, 10 minutes – a master list.

This is spinach pie which has died and gone to heaven.

Wish I could taste this maple syrup.

The perfect poached egg (via Forty-Sixth at Grace)

Have a wonderful weekend, folks!

There’s Quark in my fridge! Can you share your bunny recipe?
That photo of you and Hugo makes me melt like a chocolate egg in Louisiana.

Impressed that the maple syrup is reasonably (comparably) priced to other real maples syrups (both nationally and locally produced/distributed). My uncles sugars and every once in a while he sends along a quart (heaven!) of pure Northern Wisconsin maple syrup but that only lasts so long as he only taps enough for him and close family. Think that would be a lovely gift to give or receive!

I made the banana cereal muffins from the link on your last post and I could not get them done for some reason. I baked them a full 45 extra minutes, but they are still doughy on the inside(and very crispy on the outside). I had to use 5 bananas to get her 1.25lbs — I thought maybe she used very large bananas to use only 3 for that weight. Did you have trouble getting to bake completely after only 40 minutes? thanks!

How odd – mine were almost overdone at 35 minutes. I just used 3 bananas (and they were little), I didn’t weigh them or anything. Maybe that’s the problem?

I’d never heard of black cocoa powder, either … and it’s described as having a somewhat “smoky” flavor! I’m going to have to check it out.

Off topic, and maybe you’ve mentioned this in a blog post I missed…but I was wondering how you are handling the different languages with Hugo. My husband was raised in South Africa by his German dad and American mother but unfortunately only speaks English as that is all they ever spoke at home. My father-in-law speaks German and Afrikaner, but never spoke them to my husband. The blog Simply Bike has some interesting posts about raising a multi-lingual child that I’ve found interesting.

The only reason I’d heard of black cocoa powder was when researching how to make homemade Oreo’s. But I never gave in and bought it, hence never made the Oreo’s…

I got the Quark from the local farmer here in Nebraska and it is so creamy and delicious. I made a German cheesecake and it was so so good.

I speak only English with Hugo and Max and his family speak only German. My mother speaks to him in Italian. My husband and I mostly speak German with each other, but since I’m home alone with Hugo 80% of each week, English is the majority of what he hears. I’ve read that what’s important is consistency – babies are more than capable of soaking up multiple languages, as long as the same language always comes from the same person. That’s actually how my parents did it with me and that’s how I was raised trilingually.

    Those bunnies look yummy!
But I can’t help wondering if they might not taste better if they were also dipped in three layers of chocolate.
    White
    Milk
    Plain
    Actually, might be overkill!
But I am thinking I would still eat them!

    Hi Luisa!
Oh that nose biting….I loved it so. When Nancy was developing her oreo cookies for her sandwich book she ordered the black cocoa to get that truly black cookie. It was incredible and really did give her version of the oreos that traditional flavor. Hope all is well in your part of the world.

Oh my goodness, that spinach pie looks so good! If you ever see maple sugar candy, you should definitely pick some up. The best kind has a sort of melty consistency in the middle that I completely adore.

I made the muffins again and used only 3 bananas(didn’t weigh to get 1.25 lb. this time). I baked them for 42 minutes and they were perfect 🙂

I’ve been lucky enough to not only try Crown Maple syrup (in all of its varities–light, medium and dark) but my family was also able to tour the company’s production facility up in Dutchess County. Massive, spotless and technologcially impressive. Crown Maple is a cut above usual maple syrups from the Northeast, which are pretty good in their own right. It just has a purer, smoother taste and feel. Luckily, a higher-end grocery store in town (about 40 minutes south of the production facility) carries the syrups on a regular basis. They’re expensive, but so worth it when you need something extra special.

I’ve also heard about black cocoa via homemade Oreos. A discussion of it pops up in the comments section of the Smitten Kitchen’s recipe for them: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/05/my-kingdom-for-a-glass-of-milk/
