Today is a holiday here and the city is quiet, quiet, quiet and feels totally empty. We have a visitor from Puglia in town, so there were sweet olives and fresh braids of mozzarella for lunch and ciambelline di Pasqua coated in thick sugar icing for dessert. It's certainly the coldest Easter I can remember, but I think I've stopped caring about all the snow. Or maybe I'm just sick of complaining about it! Ha.

In other news, Hugo continues his nap strike and we are starting to come to our wit's end. Thank goodness for grandparents who will drop everything to babysit so that we can go out and have dinner and at least two whole drinks tonight (at this place, which, Berliners, is delicious).

Photos above from my Instagram account – a sunset that hints of good weather to come, roasted chicken breast for dinners to come, a teeny, tiny, pale green egg from Hugo's great-grandparents in Bavaria, and the little man himself, moments after feasting on my computer cable. (Best mom ever!)

Elsewhere,

I've never been big on sweet potato fries, but these (cornmeal-crusted!) look like they will change my mind.

The shortest documentary to be nominated for an Oscar is about…making guacamole? Sort of. (Via My Little Expat Kitchen)

You should know about this salad I made twice this past week. It's perfect.

This book sounds right up our collective alleys, no?

Soup inspiration (the third-to-last particularly).

Such beautiful photography on Happyolks.

I was just sent a copy of this stunning cookbook and have not closed the covers since.

Malted. Buttermilk. Biscuits. (Tim, you complete me.)

And updated to add: Rifka tells us how to make homemade masala dosas! I am so excited.

Have a great weekend, folks!

I definitely just let out a little squeal of joy when I realized you were back blogging on Berlin on a platter!!! I hope you enjoy the long weekend, and I too am really over complaining about the weather! At least it seems most of the ice has melted which makes walking the streets a whole lot better 🙂 which is especially important with a puppy who likes to drag you down the street.

That salad does look delicious, really delicious.
I love Deborah Madison’s new book; I sent it as a present to someone who did me a lovely favor but have been hemming and hawing about getting it for myself (WHEN will I stop buying cookbooks?), but you are the tipping point.
Luisa, I tried to buy Better than Bouillon Vegetable at Fairway (east side) and couldn’t find it there. Where did you used to buy it?
Sharffen Berger Bittersweet Chocolate is in my pantry waiting to be used in your new French Chocolate Cake this weekend!!!!! Have a great one yourself. I thought you might like to know that Apple computer cables are definitely the most nutritious.

Your links today sent me down several rabbit holes. I’ve had such an enjoyable time. Thank you!
I love Deborah Madison’s other books and I really want to love this one, but small things in it make me feel so unsettled. Like the paragraph on Ghee, where she states that a company makes better ghee than homemade. Strongly disagree. Also, it’s crazy expensive. There are other things but I won’t go on.
That link on making your own dosas at home? Totally loved it.

Oh! The second hand cookbook – I have just found out about this place, did you get it there? http://www.bibliotheca-culinaria.de/index.php/en/bibliotheca-culinaria

No, at a place in my neighborhood. Bibliotheca Culinaria is nice, though! Just on the other side of town from me.

I, too, am not a huge sweet potato fan, but oh, those corn-meal crusted fries … I think they might just be convincing enough! Thank you for that link!
Happy Easter to you & your family!

    Luisa,
Never mind; I found the Vegetable Better than Bouillon at Fairway today; they just must have been sold old last time I checked.

That is a very, very Berlin thing to say! What an outsider thinks of as the city of Berlin, the Berliner thinks of as some foreign place to which they never dare! I’d forgotten about that!
