Peace is more elusive than we think. Author C. David Coates wrote an eye opening poem which, like a mirror, exposes us to truths we may not wish to see. Here is a slightly modified version of that poem.
“Aren’t humans amazing? They kill wildlife – birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed.
Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative – and fatal – health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer.
So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases.
Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals.
Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and then plead for ‘Peace on Earth.’”
The good news is that anyone can break this cycle of violence. I did and you can too. Each of us has the power to choose compassion. Please visit these websites to align your core values with life affirming choices: http://veganvideo.org & http://tryveg.com

Merry Christmas to you as well! We just exchanged presents with my parents this afternoon, and I was excited to get your book! Can’t wait to start it… I have a feeling nap times (I have a 9 month old daughter) won’t be used for getting chores done for awhile 😉
Wishing you and your little family a joyous Christmas and New Year!

Just finished your beautiful book. What a pleasure to read! Haven’t made any of the recipes yet — I want to fill my house with the scent of that ragu! — but will get to that soon. Thank you so much for sharing your heart and love story with all of us, Luisa!

Frohe Weihnachten from Canada, Luisa! I hope you, Max and Hugo have a wonderful first Christmas together.
P.S. I am longing to make those spice cookies you mentioned a few weeks ago and hope to get to them soon as a new year’s cookie. I think a good spicy cookie would be a very good omen for the new year, don’t you? (:

I am reading your book and just love it. I was born in Germany and moved to NY and now live in Omaha, NE. not far from the farmer who sells Quark here in Lincoln. I love Germany and I wanted to move back so many times. I loved the life style, I was born in Northern Germany by Stade.

I couldn’t live without mine – the rice cooker is the heart of my asian kitchen. I use mine to steam vegies with a simple elevating contraption, by adding some water underneath and closing the lid for a few minutes. Mine also gets a workout making congee. Great for colder months and it’s literally as easy as rice, lots of stock then turn in on. Yum.

If you add a stock cube to the rice at the beginning and near the end (or if you have the keep warm feature after it is cooked) add a cup or so of frozen peas it is fantastic – my children’s favourite.
