Last fall, I was thrilled to record a piece for NPR's Berlin Stories series. Berlin Stories are "short, personal pieces" about Berlin that are broadcast on NPR's Berlin station. (By the way, did you know that Berlin is the only city outside the US with an NPR station?) For my piece, I adapted a chapter from My Berlin Kitchen, telling the story of how my mother, when she first moved to Berlin in the 1970's, got a German tradition involving doughnuts, mustard and New Year's Eve very, very wrong indeed.

At the time of the recording, Berlin Stories didn't have a recording studio yet, so we met at my friend Anna Winger's house to record the piece in her basement! (It's really, really quiet down there.) I had originally planned to simply read the chapter into the microphone, but it turns out that radio writing is quite different from book writing. So the producers and I sat around the kitchen table for a while working on the piece and eating salad until we were all happy with it. (The hideous nausea from the beginning of my pregnancy had just subsided and I was able to expand my diet beyond pretzels and potato chips. Lettuce never tasted so good!)

To get a little sneak preview of the book, you can listen to the piece here. I hope you like it.

(P.S. We buy our New Year's Eve doughnuts at this legendary bakery in Berlin. They're glorious.)

It’s travesty to wish for the summer to end, but I truly can’t wait for September to finally be able to read the book! 🙂
    Mustard doughnuts — what fun!

I loved your piece on NPR. I have been listening to all of them lately as I am working on my piece for this fall. Interesting to hear about your experience, but I am intimidated by the incredible level of craftsmanship in each person’s story. Thanks for the tips with the doughnuts I’ll watch for the mustard.

Any chance of adding stops to the tour?
Any chance of coming to Ann Arbor, Michigan?
I know a group that might like to hear you speak.

It was nice to hear your voice and listen to your stories. I may not make it to Brooklyn for your book signing when you’re in NYC, it would be better if it were in Manhattan. Reading your blog all this time, I feel almost if I know you. Viel gluck with your book tour.

As a radio journalist, I had to smile when you wrote that radio writing is different from book writing. (: Indeed! Much shorter sentences — and a lot more dashes and elipses . . .
You sound wonderful on the radio — like a regular NPR-er.
Now, I just really, really want to eat one of those doughnuts!

OMG you have “no” accent! I loved the piece but I was expecting a German accent! I cannot wait for your book. I’m so happy for you and your family.

Giulia – so far, no plans. But maybe if an Italian publisher buys the book! 🙂
Robin – unfortunately, I’m not in charge of the tour stops. They are negotiated between the publicists and the bookstores… But maybe for the paperback? Fingers crossed!
    Melanie – thank you!
Stephanie – thanks! On your next trip to Berlin…
Renae – Ha! (But I’m not German?!) Thank you! 🙂

i really enjoyed this and sooo look forward to your book. what an exciting time for you. (exhausting too- but it’s wonderful) . . . what a precious boy!
although i’m now distanced from the having babies stage, your honesty about it all in recent posts is comforting- thinking back to that time, especially that “having a 3 week old time.”
and particularly with my son whom we often felt like was hurling every curse-word in the book at us – in baby language – for not knowing what he needed in the middle of the night 🙂 clueless parents.
i sure hope to catch you in new york.
