I was informed last night by my agent, via this hastily snapped cellphone photo, that the first actual copies of My Berlin Kitchen have arrived in New York. (!) Which means that it's only a matter of time now before I get to hold a copy myself. (!!) I imagine it will be a little different than when I first held Hugo, a little less soft and deliciously scented, probably. But in its own way, no less monumental. (!!!) Right? If you had told me four years ago that one far-off summer, I would have two babies, one flesh, one paper, to my name, I would not have believed you. Oh, life. You can be so good sometimes.

(!!!!!!!)

And to make things even better, we're going on tour. Yes, folks, me and the baby and Max are getting on an airplane in late September and heading to the States to see you all and I am so stinking excited I can hardly stand it. I can't believe how lucky I am that I get to do this. (Also, terrified. Will anyone show up? Furthermore, are we out of our minds to attempt this thing with a three-month old baby?)

The tour schedule is as follows (I'll have more precise details, like addresses or other salient information posted in a soon-to-be-formatted link in the sidebar):

Friday, September 21st, 7:00 pm:
LOS ANGELES, CA – Vroman's Bookstore

Saturday, September 22nd, 2:30 pm:
SAN DIEGO, CA – Adventures by the Book, Westgate Hotel

Monday, September 24, 7:00 pm:

Tuesday, September 25th, 7:30 pm:
PORTLAND, OR – Powell's Books

Wednesday, September 26th, 6:00 pm:
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Book Passage

Thursday, September 27, 12:00 pm
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Rakestraw Books

Thursday, September 27, 7:00 pm:
SANTA CRUZ, CA – Bookshop Santa Cruz

Sunday, September 30, 5:00 pm:
WASHINGTON, DC – Politics & Prose

Monday, October 1, 7:00 pm:
NEW YORK, NY – Powerhouse Arena

Tuesday, October 2, 7:00 pm:
BOSTON, MA – Harvard Book Store

Will you come, will you be there? I cannot wait to see your faces, my dream come true.

Oh, I cannot wait to buy this book (responsibly purchased from my local independent bookstore). I only wish that you could come to Chicago, so I could get my copy signed.

Seattle, here I come! I’m in Vancouver so a 2 hour hop, skip and jump to south of the border is nothing. A 3 month old? Perfect timing! Did lots of traveling with ours when they were that age; they get used to it and now also have our travel bug. Ich freue mich riesig!! Gute Reise.

Congratulation! You won’t come to Japan, will you? Well, at least I can get the book with no delay in September. Please come to Japan someday!

Book Passage AND Book Shop SC! Yeah! (Any chance of Book Passage in Marin? Or just the Ferry Building?) And for what it’ worth – we took our older one all over the globe when he was little. Until Hugo is mobile, your only real concern will be keeping him on some semblance of a schedule and trying not to let him get too many plane germs – but in our experience little ones are great travelers – it’s the toddlers and preschoolers who make it ‘interesting’ 🙂

I’ll pitch in with the rest of your UK readers and keep our fingers crossed that a UK publisher buys the rights!
I’m sure that you, Max and Hugo will manage splendidly on tour. People thought my hubby and I were crazy because we flew to Canada when my daughter was 17 days old. We took her camping, did a road trip across three provinces and went all over to visit family and friends. We survived to tell the tale and even returned two years later to take our 3 month old son camping. No massive road trip that time, though! You can do it!

Luisa- so happy to see you’ll be in my neighborhood- Vroman’s in Pasadena- yay! Of course people will be at your signings, so don’t waste a second of time worrying about that silly thought. You write in a way that includes people, draws them into your world, and I think many of your readers feel a connection with you because of this. You’ll do great! Break a leg, or actually, don’t- and just remember to stop in the middle of this gleeful tornado and breathe it all in once in awhile. Congratulations on both of your babies:).

Wow – congratulations! Traveling with a 3 month is actually great, b/c they’re little enough that you can wear them in a carrier if they get squirmy, or sleep in the bassinet (ask for one). Traveling with a mobile 1 year is old is WAY harder, so do it now : ) Best of luck!
