Dearest readers, forgive me for my long radio silence. I was working on the first and second pass of Classic German Baking and was felled by a hideous case of the flu (the real thing, against which I was not inoculated and which swiftly infected everyone else in my household, so once I got better, after TWO FULL WEEKS in bed because the flu, that no-good jerk, then morphed into bronchitis, for the love of Pete, I had to play nurse to first my son and then my husband, leaving precious time for anything else). But we are all better now and the book is almost finished, with just a little time left before it wings its way to the printer. And over here, I find myself staring into the entirely predictable and yet no less jarring void that accompanies the end of any all-consuming creative project. It's a welcome void, one I've longed for, no doubt, and yet it's still a little…unnerving. But no matter. Life calls, as does the gym, not to mention all the recipes I have to tell you about and I can't wait to get back into writing here.

In gratitude for your patience, please accept this photo of a weeks-old baby Hugo posing alongside an absolutely epic yeasted bread that my beloved Joanie made for us as a celebration of his birth almost four years ago and that I recently dug up because I mention it in the book and I needed to jog my memory. If you look closely, you see that the loaf is in the shape of a swaddled baby and is studded not only with raisins, almonds and walnuts, but also has little balls of marzipan tucked in here and there. Isn't it insane? It was as delicious as it looks, though part of me would have gladly embalmed it to save it for the rest of my life. Who needs cute onesies and baby books when you can have this kind of baby gift? Sigh.

See you back here very soon.

And here I was thinking the long silence was because you had another baby! (From a glance at that picture, at least…) By the way, I saw your article about Easter traditions on the Kitchn the other day, accompanied by another picture of another magnificent Joanie bread. Does that woman do workshops? I want to learn from her!

Ha! Because of the photo, I thought you were going to say, “I was working on …. a baby.”
I’m glad you’re feeling better! I just ended an intense artistic project (co-leading in an Irish love story) and am feeling rather in the pit of despair. Just have to live through the void, I guess.

Good to see you back — sorry to learn that radio silence was due to health issues as well as the last-minute pre-pub frenzy. Having in the meantime acquired a poppy seed grinder I join those breathlessly awaiting the finished book.

She should!! She’s a sculptor by training, if that helps explain her incredible talent. I love that Easter rooster almost more than I love my bread baby… 🙂

    HA!
Oof, the pit of despair is no good. Hugs to you and onward! (I keep thinking about Prince these days and what he would do in this situation. It seems like he was the master of always looking forward and never falling into any post-project malaise because he always had another project and was unfailingly forward-looking and optimistic and…convinced by his own talent, in the best way possible. Anyway, food for thought!)

Ugh, yes, and after Hugo was born, a well-meaning nurse thought that the fresh wound/scab was blood from the delivery (!!) and SCRUBBED IT – ROUGHLY – and as a result I have a scar. Aaah, memories.

I’m so glad you have all recovered. The flu – as you put it, the REAL flu – is no joke. Just thinking about it gives me chills. I can’t wait for the book to come out! Congratulations on getting to the end of the project.

Tell her there’s at least one baking fanatic out there willing to pay for a workshop, were she to organize one. Seriously!

That bread is totally amazing! The closer you look, the more you see. I can understand why you would have wanted to have it embalmed! And your little son, so cute, holding a toe with another. Babies! Get well soon.

Glad I am not the only one who takes long breaks. I guess when you have been blogging for so long, sometimes “life happens.” We also had some terrible cases of the flu this winter. Glad you are back on your feet and can’t wait to see the new book!

So nice to see you back again! I missed your posts so much that I broke down earlier this week and made the sweet potato muffins — and my husband and I don’t like sweet potatoes. However, we liked the muffins, so this could be a good way to eat sweet potatoes for us. (:
Stay healthy and know that we can’t wait for your German baking book!
