Picstitch-1
In a little less than half an hour, my husband and I are leaving the apartment, taking the bus six stops and checking into this hotel for a much-needed one-night getaway. It feels totally indulgent and also totally fantastic and I am basically counting the seconds until we get there. (I think I should also be packing a bag right now?)

But before I go, a few things that I read and loved this week:

Shauna's post on a weekly cooking routine. SO GOOD. Do you guys do this?

How to sharpen a knife without a knife sharpener or steel. (!!)

Brilliant: A comic book Piglet review! One of my favorites ever and that's saying a lot because I basically love everything about the Piglet.

My favorite thing about this article on a recent uproar in Rome about school lunches is the last paragraph.

Ira Glass talks about his creative process. Interesting, funny and enlightening.

We are on a crazy roll with recipe testing for the book, but I'm starting to develop a serious aversion to sugar. Wholesome meals like this one, with buckwheat and roasted romanesco, sound even more appealing these days.

Finally, Max introduced me to The War on Drugs a few weeks ago and I've fallen hard for the music. It makes me want to get in a car and drive for days, preferably somewhere where the sky is always blue.
The whole album is amazing; here's just the first song:

Thanks for being patient while things got quiet around here this week. Next week: turmeric lemonade! Black bean soup! A report on our little adventure tonight!

Have a lovely weekend, you all.

Hollllaaaa, love me some War on Drugs. Man, Max has some great music taste–I still listen to that one Bombino song you shared on here (and it had such a nice story to go with it). Check out Kurt Vile, he’s one of the guys in The War on Drugs. His song “Baby’s Arms” is pretty perfect.

Luisa, I cannot thank you enough for that link to Shauna’s post (and thank you to Shauna as well). I’ve just got back to work after our son’s birth, and that post really spoke to me. Before, I always liked trying new recipes and would dawdle at the market for hours exploring foods, trying new combinations in my head but now, now I just do NOT have the time for any of that! This has inspired me to put together a weekly menu – it will make shopping, prep and cooking incredibly more efficient – and hopefully bring the joy back into weeknight meals again. Thank you so much!!

Have a wonderful getaway. It will feel like you have been away for a week.
I am a fairly recent recipient of your blogs and would love to know where to find the recipe for that gorgeous looking twisted yeasted loaf/bun photographed top left of this post. It looks wonderful.

Hope you enjoyed your mini-break 🙂
I love Shauna’s blog post about routine… it made me think of my favourite food memories from when I was a kid. It also makes grocery shopping sound so much easier and that feeling of ‘oh what am I going to cook this week?’ when your not feeling inspired seem so much easier! I just have too many recipes I want to cook to have 7 nights of the same meals but then again I don’t have two kids to have to think about either… just a bf and a cat 🙂

All of those photos are of things that I’m testing for my cookbook on German baking. The book comes out next year. The braided loaf will definitely be in there!

Luisa – enjoy that hotel! I stayed there in November and absolutely loved it. One of my favorite hotels in Berlin. Loved having dinner there as well. Enjoy!!

Gosh I found that review to be in poor taste. Very poor taste. I’ve never looked at a piglet review before and I won’t be inclined to again if such poor journalism and mean spiritedness is the norm. I love Mimi’s blog as you can probably tell as I do yours.

My family is Russian, that is exactly how we used to sharpen knives when I was growing up.

Ok, a food blog and it’s a note about music that prods me to participate here – FREAKING WAR ON DRUGS! I’ve been evangelical about them since I saw them live last summer. If you can, go go go to their show. A little but Don Henly, a little bit Bob Dylan, a little bit I don’t even know what. Excellent cooking music. Cheers – Chloe

I first saw Mimi Thorisson’s blog a few years ago via a recipe from Smitten Kitchen and was repulsed by the inherent narcissism and covert/overt angling for a book deal. I might have been interested if there had been any intriguing recipes or culinary challenges discussed but there were none. Just many pretty photos of Mimi and her, admittedly very photogenic, family by her professional photographer husband. So she has a book now. I’m sure it’s very pretty. Glad it was lost out to Fancy Desserts.
Thanks for the music. Really enjoyed it. Maybe your next book should be music paired with recipes. That could be interesting.
