Rice with ketchup
Sometimes blogs are accused of peddling an unrealistic, gauzy version of life that makes readers feel inadequate over time. I'd hate to think of that happening here, not when I indulge in culinary confections such as this – cold, day-old rice dug out of the rice cooker and topped with a squirt of Heinz ketchup and toasted sesame seeds for lunch yesterday – on a regular basis.

(There was a whole dill pickle, too. Beforehand.)

(Those sesame seeds were totally inspired, though, right?!)

(I also am still wearing my workout clothes from this morning. I have not yet worked out. It's 2:07 pm.)

(Keeping it real!)

Today I'm only linking to things that just plain old made me happy this week:

We have all been despairing a lot about humanity lately, but help is here! If you also need your faith restored or want a quasi-religious joyous experience, you need to check this out. You probably alllllll know about Humans of New York, but on the off-chance you do not, you're welcome – it is possibly the very best thing on the entire Internet.

Catherine's 10-year-old (!) post on homemade hot chocolate. This blog may be the second best thing on the Internet.

Quietly freaking out about the concept of roasted shallot, tomato and pickled jalapeño quesadillas for dinner.

This video on creativity, which has made the rounds many times over, but which I stumbled upon again recently at a very opportune moment.

This is how masterful food blogging is done! Sometimes all you need are a few sentences. (And roasted onions.)

This video on…fatherhood? made me laugh so hard I cried. Tears rolling down my cheeks, gasping, etc. It's old (sorry!), but hysterical.

See you next week!

The HONY fundraiser fills me with such joy.
Also can you get furikake in Berlin? It’s basically a Japanese salt/sugar/sesame seed/crushed nori blend? I throw that over rice with a fried egg on a regular basis. Ketchup wouldn’t be out of place there either. OH sriracha mixed with ketchup. See, even your “uninspired” lunch is inspiring.
Hope you have a very happy weekend!

Hi Luisa, your blog entries are like that dose of comfort food to the spirit. Always love reading whatever you conjure up. Just like your recipes. Many are made just with a few main ingredients, but the way you season, pair them, bring out the best in them. January in Berlin is not an easy month and reading this entry made me laugh and feel warm and fuzzy all at the same time. Have a great weekend! yours truly.

I so relate to the day-old-rice-for-lunch thing, although my go to is beans. And sometimes a spoonful of peanut butter with milk – very inventive stuff happening over here. It’s still has to be better than McDonald’s, right? At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

HONY is so great, I just want to hug Brandon (and his girlfriend, who organizes the annual holiday dinner match ups). I also could hug you right now for posting that photo, it makes me feel much better about last night’s dinner of rice crackers spread with butter and sprinkled with cheese.

Wow Luisa, talk about getting back in the saddle, you’re in the saddle and riding away into the sunset! I take one week out and upon my return there are 3 glorious posts waiting to be read. Thanks for the links, I always find something new and engaging in your recommendations and especially enjoyed the fatherhood video which my husband and I watched as I fed my 5-day-old daughter. Keep up the fab work!

Wow, the article about the Humans of New York photographer raising that much money is so inspiring! We all need a little vaccination against cynicism every now and then 🙂
Also, I love adding sesame seeds to everything and feeling fancier. Their subtle nutty flavor enhances almost any savory dish!!

Ha! I thought that was a chic umeboshi salted plum on top. Kethcup: SO much better.
    What are workout clothes?
YES to Catherine being about the best thing on the web.
My only gripe: I think you may have her beat.
    (Happy week to you, Luisa!)

That rice made it onto a plate…why are you peddling this unachievable lifestyle to inadequate mortals??
    Kidding. Enjoy.
Liebe Grüsse and thanks for the cheering post, as ever!

Luisa, I so love your honesty. It is one of the big reasons why I’ve come back to your site over the years! I so, so love all the beautiful food blogs out there, though I totally agree that with things so perfectly styled, etc., it makes the very simple pleasures of real, everyday home cooking and eating seem inadequate sometimes. I actually just wrote something really similar over on my site. My husband I own an artisanal sandwich shop in NYC and are in the process of opening our second location, which I’ve been documenting on my site. Part of me was going to wait to post any pictures of the new space until it was actually finished, but then I thought, “you know, this messy, gutted, totally unattractive renovation portion — this is real life,” and so I posted all the gross, completely unstyled pics along with a few words. Thanks for sharing your honesty. Also, on a completely different note, my mom used to make “Spanish rice” as a family meal when we were kids (aka: white rice mixed with ketchup), so no judgement here — it’s a weirdly good combo!
