Dear Readers,

I have fallen and I can't get up. I took a little break over the holidays, just a little one, I thought, and now I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get back in the blogging saddle. I keep sidling up to it, but I can't even get a foot in the stirrup! I just stand there, staring at the horse and its big, glossy-black side, and then leave again because I'm so intimidated. And tired. Gah. (In case you were wondering, the insomnia continues unabated. But I am seeking professional help, starting this week. Cross your fingers.)

So today I'm going to make a list, because list-making soothes me. And perhaps by making said list I can actually pass along some kind of interesting content to you? We'll see. Let's take it slow. Thank you.

1. The hilarious Amelia Morris of Bon Appétempt is about to publish her first book, a coming-of-age story with recipes. It is, as I said in my blurb, wry and touching (I still feel the same way!). It made me laugh out loud (no joke) and also kind of broke my heart. Plus, on page 230 of the book, Amelia shares a recipe for potato, corn and chile soup that we declared the best soup discovery of 2014. It's exciting (chiles! avocado and cheese topping!) and comforting (potato soup with corn thrown in, enough said) at the same time, plus you get to crumble tortilla chips on top of the soup, which is at the top of the list of reasons why being an adult can be, at times, a lot of fun. Thank you, Amelia!

2. We got the keys to our new apartment on Friday. Renovations start today (we are replacing the electrical system, having the walls painted, and installing a kitchen). The process of finding and buying this apartment has been so smooth and uncomplicated thus far that my level of terror regarding the renovations has reached DEFCON 3. Something has to go wrong at some point with this whole endeavor, doesn't it? What will it be? Black mold in the walls? Murderous, chain-smoking neighbors? A hidden World War II bomb lodged in the ceiling? (As you can imagine, my lack of sleep is totally helping me out on this one.) Here's a picture of the kitchen, in all its dingy glory. We are keeping the 105-year-old tiles, which I am thrilled about, and the 105-year-old floor, which I am less thrilled about, and will finally have a gas stove again, for which I give thanks every single day, forever and ever, amen.

We will not, for the record, be keeping that stove. Hallelujah, praise be.

3. From June 15-20 this year, Rachel Roddy of rachel eats and I will be hosting a food writing workshop called The Language of Food at the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School in Sicily. For five days, we will read, write, explore and cook together, with the flavors and fragrances of Sicily as inspiration. Fabrizia Lanza, the owner of the school, will take us on excursions throughout the region, from Agrigento to Polizzi Generosa, as well as introduce us to local winemakers and food artisans. It will be fun and delicious, but more than anything I hope it will be an inspiring and productive week for anyone who can join. (There are 10 to 15 spots available!) I cannot overstate how thrilled I am to be co-hosting it with Rachel, whose writing fills me up with contentment and joy every time I read it. For more information, click here.

Here is a picture Rachel took at dusk last June at the school during aperitivo hour. Aaaahhh…

4. The one thing I have made three times in the past month has been this chili, but with beef instead of turkey and with twice as many beans and half as much meat. The first time I made it, it was actually to use up a batch of stale cornbread (Edna Lewis's sour milk cornbread), but we loved it so much that I can't stop making it. I have no idea if it is authentic, nor do I really care. It's very delicious, very easy and can be easily doubled to feed a crowd, with leftovers to boot. It even pleased every single member of my book club recently. You should know about it.

Behold the cubed stale cornbread:

Chili

And that's it! That wasn't so hard after all, I guess. Happy New Year, everyone, if it is still acceptable to say so on January 19th. I'll be back soon, after trying this milk-roasted chicken and making something from this beautiful book (I am still waffling between trying the salted chocolate chip cookies and the bittersweet brownies with peanut butter frosting – have a preference?).

Luisa, judging from that time stamp of 4:38 am your insomnia is present full force right now. I wish I could send you some sleep, I can fall asleep anywhere from 9 pm onwards, if I am tired enough, which means that in the last three years, I can count on two hands the number of movies I’ve finished with my boyfriend in the evening, and on one hand the number of Tatort shows I’ve seen to the end, or to the halfway mark for that matter. In fact, I would love to trade for some staying awake ability. I gave a copy of your book to the mother of an Austrian friend this winter, and we finished the braised chicoree from it within about 1 min of plating. I’ve been using your recipes now for 3 years, and many of them feel like my own. Just recently, I made the meringue for the family I stayed with over Christmas and New Year’s. Anyway, what i want to say is, I really enjoy your writing and your recipes, and if that class wasn’t out of reach financially for a phd student, I would love to attend. frohes neues, Lisa

A happy new year (with lots of sleep soon) to you too! It’s nice to hear from you again.
Just a heads up: Something went wrong with the link to your book club.

Good luck with the renovations, and the workshop! Unfortunately I don’t be sitting in the courtyard when you’re there. (Drinking wine and eating panelle…) But I’ll be with you (in spirit) as you tackle the new kitchen : )

I hope your insomnia will be a thing of the past soon. I know how it feels when you don’t get enough sleep. I’m interested in your workshop but have to make sure the dates work since I have to go to a wedding that month in Nothern Italy. Good luck with your renovation!

Welcome back. Having just renovated my kitchen, I’d advise you to off the floor if you don’t like it. A new floor that you actually like will not add appreciably to the overall cost and it will bring you daily satisfaction.

I’m jealous of your renovation- you have blank slate to make it completely yours, so have fun with it! It’s going to look amazing when you’re done and it’ll be worth all the hard work! And…brownies.

There’s a reason why extended sleep deprivation is considered a torture method. After not sleeping properly, over a long time, the thought processes turn sluggish, and life in general turn a bit gloomy. I hope you get help quickly.
    All my best!

Having struggled with insomnia myself, I wish you all the luck in getting the help you need! It is no laughing matter. That being said, I’m so happy to see you posting! You are my favorite food blogger and I always look forward to your posts. (Oh, and go with the cookies – I’m always looking for a good salted chocolate chip recipe!)

If I was renovating an apartment there would be no sleep for me either. The chicken roasted in milk sounds like it could be amazing. I wish my summer wasn’t booked up and I didn’t have a gazillion children that I could just run over to Sicily this summer. We spent a week in Sicily two years ago and we loved it! Driving not so much! Sounds like it is going to be so much fun.

I am so so so sorry to hear that you’re still dealing with insomnia, friend. Nothing makes me feel more anxious or more alone than being awake when everyone else in the house is asleep. Just awful. I’m thinking of you. xo

I was wondering if you are going to post the recipe for Amelia’s potato corn and chili soup(your best soup discovery,..)?
It sounds a lot like the Tortilla soup we eat in south Texas.

OH I love that milk braised chicken (I use the Sassy Radish version, but skip the cinnamon in favor of a couple of cloves – the husband doesn’t like cinnamon, how? why? we’ll never know).
That potato, corn and chile soup looks wonderful. And I checked out Amelia’s blog after you posted about it in IG, so it looks like I’ll need to buy that book because I’m a sap for anything ending with a baby.

Luisa, is there a pool near-by where you could exercise in the water, at least 4ntimes a week? I found that enormously helpful.

I’ve seen every doctor (it feels like) on insomnia. Mine kicked in after a difficult delivery when I was put back on birth control. Ethnic healers and acupuncture did nothing, sleep centers and meditating did not help. I was on a ton of meds, uppers and downers, all of which made me feel horrible. I could eat Ambien like candy and not sleep. Eventually I reasoned it must be hormones and went back on pill and that somehow allowed Ambien to work. A year later I went off of Ambien (which by the way is no joke, horrible journey for sure), then got off the pill (cant have any more kids anyhow). It’s still an uphill struggle, I can’t really travel since I wont sleep but I am better now. It is such a dark place – I wish you find help soon. (and for doc’s who will inevitably tell you that we all sleep less as we get older, you have my permission to show your middle finger)

So glad you’re back. Could you post the recipe for the potato and corn soup. Looks so good. I don’t know if this will work for you, but an author “friend” on Facebook toasted this trick and said it really helped her. I tried it, and lo and behold, it worked. Within one to two minutes of doing it, I fell asleep. The trick consists of inhaling deeply to the count of 4, holding the breath to the count of 7 and exhaling to the count of 8. Repeat until you fall asleep, usually just 3 or 4 times. She swears by it and I have fallen right to sleep every time I try it.

How exciting!? New kitchen eeek my dream! I remember when my parents had their kitchen done when I was about 8, we cooked and ate dinner in the lounge room and dinner consisted mostly of everything microwaved. Microwave bolognese from scratch, microwave lamb chops and microwaved curry from scratch. I stay far away from cooking meet in a microwave now 🙂 hope it all goes well! Can’t wait for bon appetempt to come out!

Best wishes to you, Luisa, on the insomnia front (I’ve also been there). And congratulations on the new apartment! About the kitchen floor – any chance of a wood floor, or even a floating wood floor that has a tiny bit of spring to it? Much easier to stand on for lengths of time than harder surfaces.
