Roasted broccoli
It was one of those days. You know, where everything is just a little off? The kind of day where you wake up tired and never seem able to catch up. Where you find yourself clock-watching until bedtime. I hate those days. Feeling exhausted and impatient, then feeling guilty about feeling exhausted and impatient, and generally just wishing that someone else could come be the mommy for the day so that I'd be free to go sit in a dark room somewhere with my eyes closed.

Thank goodness I had a head of broccoli stashed away in the fridge. After I put Hugo to bed, I had just enough juice in me to turn on the oven, cut the broccoli apart and dress it with ground cumin, coriander, some red pepper flakes, salt and olive oil. Like this, but without the shrimp. 20 minutes later, a blissful 20 minutes spent staring slack-jawed at the screen, I had a mess of tender, high-octane broccoli for dinner.

Some days, that's all there is. And it has to be enough.

Spicy Roasted Broccoli with Lemon
Serves 1 for a light dinner

1 medium head of broccoli
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
Flaky salt to taste
Red pepper flakes to taste
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 lemon

1. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Cut the broccoli into bite-size florets. Toss with the olive oil, salt, red pepper flakes, cumin and coriander. Spread out on a sheet pan and put in the oven for 10 minutes.

2. After 10 minutes, take the pan out and toss the broccoli around. Put the pan back in the oven for 10 additional minutes.

3. Remove the pan from the oven and squeeze the lemon over the broccoli. Toss well and eat immediately.

I was thinking, wait a second we’ve cooked this before and it’s my favorite with Shrimp 🙂 Oh how I know those days and that guilt.

My heart goes out to yours, Luisa. Standing with you in your tricky, in-the-trenches day. I have experienced the same thing (in fact, just yesterday) with my dear little son too. Watching the clock move at a snail’s pace, waiting for the respite of putting him down for a nap or nighttime, wishing someone could relieve me for just a moment — when I don’t normally feel this way. I have also felt the broccoli-to-the-rescue! thing — absolutely. I thought I was the only one. I feel happy when I can “indulge” in broccoli or kale or cauliflower (with lemon and parmesan) after a day like that.
    Thinking of you!

I have to comment – I was linked to your blog a couple of weeks ago, and I ordered your book. I got it day before yesterday and I have spent the most fantastic couple of days reading it from cover to cover every time I had a spare few minutes. It was absolutely beautiful – full of charm and love, and yes, it was definitely a love story. I have recommended it to all my friends, now I need to go leave a review in all the right places. You made me want to throw a few items in a bag and run to the nearest airport to go to Berlin. My husband was born in Germany, his parents are from Braunschweig. Lovely, lovely book. xoxoxo

Yes – the guilt for not taking and radiating to your little ones delight in each moment of the day! I’d say let go of it, but then I’d have to ask you how! Broccoli to the rescue, indeed. And your blog, too, as any sentence that begins, “Thank goodness I had a head of broccoli…” is enough to make exhausted little me smile!

Lordy, sometimes that is all there is. I love to cook, and we farm for heaven’s sake, but this has been a doozy of a winter, and I’m just now starting to breathe normally again. I still can’t quite get a grip in the kitchen. My go-to, then, is a frittata. I don’t know why I ever think, “Well, sure, but I just made that last week.” It is always good and always right. But so too is blasting some broccoli, I think.

Ah, yes, those clock watching days that drag on and on. I hear ya. A perfect fried egg on bread is my end of the day comfort food. A runny yolk can soothe even the most frayed of nerves.

I am new to your blog and I really love it! I especially love the ‘Link Loves’. It’s like my own personal pinterest without all the stuff I don’t care about. I know it must be alot of work doing those LL’s and I wanted you to know how appreciated it is. You are a very interesting, creative, real person. Thank you for doing what you do…

I remember that age and having many nights where I stared at the clock, mustered a little bit more energy to read a book or do a fun little activity, then hopefully looking at the clock again only to find it was barely three minutes later and bedtime was still a long way away. Finally when that last 45 minutes before bedtime was over, guilt and relief washed over me at once! I think that is when my taste in books and movies came down several pegs, and I preferred somewhat more ‘lite’ fare for a good long while! Hang in there.

I so remember the days like that! They were the ones when my husband would walk in the door and I would burst into tears. Then he would ask if I’d like to go to my “happy place” which was the local Barnes & Noble where I would get a warm drink and sit and read books. And it was my happy place. Now my kids are 8 & 10 and I realize the truth of “the days are long but the years are short”.

Thank you for sharing. I’m glad I’m not alone. This whole week was spent in the trenches and this post is lifting some of the guilt that’s been eating me too. We’re also in the middle of a stupid blizzard with some nasty winds, snow, ice rain and hail. It’s not helping my mood that was already deteriorating. I managed to successfully get my toddler to nap and tried to not waste my free time (1hour and 30 minutes) by being all gloomy and be productive instead but it happened anyway. My minutes are up and I have to be dressed and out there to pick up my older girl from school. In Québec there is no such thing as snow days 😉 maybe this weather will whip me into shape and wake me a little? 😉 Then I’ll face the eternal what’s for supper question. I had no clue and it’s time for an overdue grocery of fresh produce but I’m glad I decided to catch up on your blog because this not only this made me feel a bit better but your next post is about meatloaf and so this is what I’ll do. Thanks! I only wish I had broccoli! 🙂
